Bird of the Month: Hummingbird
Here are some fascinating fun facts about hummingbirds: (photo by Danielle Haney)

  • There are 18 Hummingbird species in North America. They are found no where else in the world except the New World (North, Central, South America.)
  • The oldest known wild Hummingbird on record was a Broad-tailed Hummingbird that was over 12 years old.
  • There are over 325 species of Hummingbirds, making them the second largest bird family in the world.
  • Hummingbirds weigh 1/10 of an ounce; about the weight of a penny.
  • Hummingbirds' brains are about the size of a BB.
  • Hummingbirds have such underdeveloped legs that they are unable to walk.
  • A mother hummingbird weighs only about 8 times more than her egg.
  • They lay the world's smallest bird egg.
  • Hummingbirds generally lay 2 eggs about the size of a blueberry.
  • Ruby-throated Hummingbirds have one of the highest nesting success rates of any Neotropical migrant.
  • They use spider webs as glue to attach the nest to a tree branch as well as a binding agent for the building materials.
  • The nest is about the size of a golf ball; around 1 ½ inches in diameter.
  • Hummingbirds eat about every 10 minutes.
  • They do not have an innate preference for red. Each hummingbird must learn the association between red flowers and food.

Products to Enjoy and Attract Hummingbirds
(hint: Mother's Day is May 8th!)
Our most popular feeder for Mother's Day is our 16-ounce hummingbird feeder shown here. It includes a built-in ant trap and a frosted measuring scale for easy filling. It has 6 ports and the nectar solution recipe is printed under the lid. Be sure to stop by Wild Birds Unlimited for a great selection of unique gifts perfect for mom (and Mother Nature!).

The hummingbirds have arrived!
As you can see in the map below, the Ruby-throated Hummingbird is well on its way into North America. Click the image for the most up-to-date migration map.

Pathways To Nature® Travel Log: Photographer's Mecca at Tule Lake, CA
If bird photography is your game, the Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge in northeast California should be at the top of your list for places to see. And, thanks to a $23,500 grant from the Pathways To Nature Conservation Fund, you might find yourself nose to beak with a White Pelican, or Clark's Grebe, or any of dozens of other species found on Tule Lake.

With the Pathways funding, Refuge staff built a photography blind at the end of a 700' long, handicap accessible trail. The blind puts photographers and birders at the edge of a sandbar in Tule Lake, which is surrounded by cattails and bulrushes. Sometimes birds approach as close as 20' to 25', providing full frame images. Waterfowl, shorebirds, herons, egrets, and rails are just a few of the species you might encounter.

To help ensure undisturbed viewing, the Refuge requires reservations for early morning photo safaris. Birders and nature lovers are also welcome to come and enjoy this unique opportunity to join the birds in their wetlands haunts. So grab your camera and binoculars and head west ... the birds of Tule Lake await you.
