As we celebrate this special season, we invite you to bring nature home for the holidays and wish you and yours a joyous yuletide.

Watch for juncos feeding on the ground under your feeders this winter. This lively bird is a ground dweller and feeds on seeds and small fruits in the open. It also moves through the lower branches of trees and seeks shelter in small shrubs. The Dark-eyed Junco, shown here, is much more visible when snow covers the ground - finding seeds that have dropped from your bird feeders.

The Dark-eyed Junco was the most common feeder bird in North America during the 1996-1997 Project FeederWatch season. Project FeederWatch is an annual survey of birds that visit feeders in the winter (it's not too late to sign up for the 2003-2004 season!). Wild Birds Unlimited is a sponsor of this program and encourages your participation.

More junco facts:

  • Female juncos travel farther south for winter than the males.  It is thought that the males stay further north to be near the breeding grounds come spring for prime nesting territories.
  • There is a definite hierarchy within the flocks. You can observe the pecking order with birds lunging at subordinates or even pumping the tail or flashing the white outer tail feathers. The general dominance order is older males, younger males, older females and younger females.
  • They feed on the ground or at ground feeders.
  • White outer tail feathers flash as they fly away.
  • Juncos cover most of the US in winter.
  • They eat seeds as well as some insects.
