The wonder of winter birdfeeding.
(Ranchette Retreat pictured here - featuring long roof overhang to shelter birds from winter weather.)

As winter blows through much of North America birds start to stake out their winter feeding grounds and places to seek shelter from the cold. Birds use more energy in winter than at other times of the year so they tend to eat more often. Suet, peanuts and Wild Birds Unlimited custom seed blends high in black oil sunflower can provide the extra calories birds need. And be sure feeders are full for breakfast. After a long cold night, birds stock up early in the day to restore their energy. Birds may seem a bit fluffier and fatter during this season. That’s because one of the ways birds stay warm is to fluff out their feathers to create air pockets of “insulation” between the layers. Birds also use bushes, evergreens, nesting boxes and old brush piles to escape winter’s snow and wind. A clean source of water that’s free from ice is important for birds as well. Birds not only need water to drink, but they also use it to clean their feathers so they can keep warm. If you want to “winterize” your backyard birdfeeding setup, come talk with our Certified Birdfeeding Specialists at a store near you.

Whooping Cranes are well on their way.
Sixteen Whooping Cranes are about halfway through their ultra light-led migration journey from Wisconsin to Florida. The cranes are part of a project to reintroduce a population of the endangered species to eastern North America. The birds are heading to Chassahowitzka National Wildlife Refuge along the Gulf Coast of Florida. They are to return on their own to Necedah National Wildlife Refuge in the spring. Wild Birds Unlimited has supported this effort with grants from its Pathways To Nature Conservation Fund, to which all stores contribute a portion of sales. Grants have paid for one of the ultra light aircraft, education materials, and enclosures where the cranes live and a viewing blind at Necedah National Wildlife Refuge. Learn more at http://www.wbu.com and follow the cranes’ progress at http://www.operationmigration.org. (Photo courtesy Operation Migration.)
