Wild Birds Unlimited
Partners
Wild Birds Unlimited is deeply committed to educating the public about the
importance of understanding our environment and preserving our natural wildlife
habitats. The company has developed many partnerships with organizations that
support its core mission of bringing people and nature together. Many of these
partnerships offer people the opportunity to actively participate in conservation
efforts, to learn more about birdwatching, birdfeeding and nature appreciation, and
to play a role in scientific research designed to protect the environment from
harmful changes. Wild Birds Unlimited feels it is very important to support these
efforts and to continually raise awareness of environmental preservation so that
generations to come can experience and appreciate the marvels that nature holds for
us all.
Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology
BirdSource/Great Backyard Bird Count
Since 1998 the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon
Society have managed and overseen the Great Backyard Bird Count
(GBBC) throughout North America. The GBBC program is part of BirdSource,
which is jointly managed by Cornell and the society. Individuals, families
and community groups can participate in the bird count, which occurs each
February, by tracking the birds they see at their feeders and in their
backyards, local parks and other outdoor locations. This information will
help define bird ranges, populations, migration pathways and habitat needs,
and ultimately help with bird conservation. Wild Birds Unlimited is a major
sponsor of this event and BirdSource.
Project FeederWatch
The Cornell Lab of
Ornithology operates Project FeederWatch in partnership with the National
Audubon Society, Bird Studies Canada and Canadian Nature Federation. The
program relies on volunteers to count birds at their backyard feeders once
every two weeks from November to April. The information helps scientists
gain a better understanding of population trends and movements of birds and
helps develop an awareness of North American feeder bird conservation
efforts. Wild Birds Unlimited is a sponsor of this
project.
The Birdhouse Network Nest Box Cam
The Nest Box Cam is part of The Birdhouse Network, which is an organization
that focuses on monitoring birds using birdhouses or nest boxes in backyards
and neighborhoods across North America. Participants gather information such
as the number of eggs and young in the nest, and the data is used in
scientific research to help answer ecological questions about bird
populations. The Nest Box Cam uses Internet technology and miniature video
cameras placed inside various nesting locations to record nesting behavior
and promote understanding of birds' breeding biology. Wild Birds Unlimited
sponsors this program.
Bird Studies Canada
Bird Studies Canada
conducts research throughout Canada through volunteer-based surveys such as
the Canadian Lakes Loon Survey and Project FeederWatch. In addition, it
coordinates the analysis of data collected by a growing network of
observatories monitoring migratory birds across Canada through the Canadian
Migration Monitoring Network. Effective June 1, 2005, as part of our support
for Bird Studies Canada, Wild Birds Unlimited is the sponsor of Bird Studies
Canada's Destination Eagle project (DE). This project fits juvenile eagles
with a transmitter and each eagle will be tracked on the
Eagle Tracker Website. Wild Birds Unlimited is a major corporate
sponsor of this not-for-profit bird conservation organization.
Song
Bird Coffee
Song Bird Coffee is the product of a joint venture between the American
Birding Association (ABA) and Thanksgiving Coffee Company. Together they
offer the Song Bird line of shade-grown coffees to enable bird lovers,
coffee lovers and everyone to vote with their pocketbooks for the survival
of bird habitat while enjoying superb coffee. The ABA endorses Song Bird
Coffee, while Thanksgiving produces and markets the product. The company
also returns 15 cents per package to the ABA. Wild Birds Unlimited
supports the American Birding Association through the
sale of Song Bird Coffee at participating stores. So, your purchase
of this shade-grown coffee helps to fund the conservation and education
programs of ABA, including ABA's contribution to Partners in Flight.
The Organization for Bat Conservation
The Organization for Bat Conservation is a non-profit organization that
educates, protects, rescues and researches bats. Its purpose is to help
protect bats and their habitats through conservation and education. Members
of the organization present thousands of programs each year about the
benefits and uniqueness of bats. The organization also helps public and
private landowners provide suitable roosting habitats for birds. Wild Birds
Unlimited supports this organization through the sale of bat boxes
and sponsored the video, Bats The True Story.
American Camping Association
The American
Camping Association is a group of camp professionals who share knowledge and
experiences to enhance and ensure the quality of camp programs. Wild Birds
Unlimited and the National Wildlife Federation have developed and designed a
program for campers called Birds and Their Habitats: Camp Education Program.
The program explains the components of a wildlife habitat and focuses on
birds. In addition to creating a certified National Wildlife Federation
habitat at the campsite, campers are encouraged to return home to develop
habitats in their backyards or at their schools.
Purple
Martin Conservation Association
The Purple Martin Conservation Association is an incorporated nonprofit
organization dedicated to the conservation, management, restoration and
enhancement of the Purple Martin (Progne subis). The Purple Martin
Conservation Association is the only organization devoted exclusively to the
scientific study of Purple Martins, their biology, and habitat requirements.
Since their formation in 1986, they've focused on research, education, and
on developing and improving products for martins. Wild Birds Unlimited
supports the PMCA through the sales of the Wild Birds Unlimited Purple
Martin Houses.
Chipper Woods Bird Observatory
Wild Birds
Unlimited sponsors this Web site to further educate birders and non-birders
on the banding and observing of birds at the Chipper Woods Bird Observatory
in Indiana. The site is designed as a resource for students, teachers,
researchers and backyard birders who want to learn about birds and
conservation issues. It includes stunning photographs of the bird-banding
process and general information about various bird species including their
nesting habits and conservation status.
The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation
The
National Fish and Wildlife Foundation works to conserve healthy populations
of fish, wildlife and plants through creative and respectful partnerships.
The foundation awards challenge grants to projects that benefit and promote conservation education, habitat protection and restoration and natural
resources management. The foundation partners with Wild Birds Unlimited to
manage the Pathways To Nature® Conservation Fund
and help select recipients. The foundation's challenge grant program matches
Wild Birds Unlimited contributions and increases each grant's value.
North
American Bluebird Society
Founded in 1978 by Dr. Lawrence Zeleny, The North American Bluebird Society
(NABS) is a non-profit education, conservation and research organization
that promotes the recovery of bluebirds and other native cavity-nesting bird
species in North America.
The slogan "Effective Conservation" says it all. NABS has sought to
educate, persuade, and enlighten the public in methods that an interested
person could use to help bluebirds or other native cavity nesters.
Wild Birds Unlimited is a major cooperate sponsor of this not-for-profit
organization.
