Understand the Songbird Coffee Connection
You probably don't think much about the birds as you take your first
sip of coffee each morning. Except, perhaps, for the birds you see out
your kitchen window. But, did you know that your coffee could have a
dramatic effect on some of the birds you see outside your window? |
|
That's because many migratory songbirds count on lush coffee plantations in
Mexico, South and Central America as their winter home. The trees, bushes
and shrubs that form a canopy over the coffee plants provide a resource-rich
environment for birds to spend the winter. Growing in the shade, the coffee
plants mature slowly—as nature intended—and that makes for a better tasting
cup of coffee.
Many
coffee producers have stripped their plantations of trees and other plants
so the coffee beans can mature more quickly under sun-drenched conditions.
Not only does this make a less tasty cup of coffee, it's bad for the birds.
Studies in Mexico and Colombia found up to 97 percent fewer bird species in
sun coffee farms than on shade grown coffee farms.
